The chair has a seat that folds down about a horizontal axle24and which is intended, in particular, to equip halls that receive the public, such as lecture theatres and/or show halls. This chair comprises at least an underframe having an essentially longitudinal axis14and to which a backrest16may be fixed, and with respect to which a fixed horizontal axle24is determined. The seat20comprises a first part32projecting forwards with respect to the horizontal axle24, and a second part30projecting towards the underframe12. The underframe12contains a gas strut40, one end48of which is fixed to the underframe12, and the other end50of which is fixed to the second part30of the seat20.
