A display device including: a pair of substrates10and12placed so as to oppose each other; a plurality of pixel electrodes16formed on one12of the pair of substrates; a counter electrode18formed on the other10of the pair of substrates; and a modulation layer1provided between the plurality of pixel electrodes16and the counter electrode18, the modulation layer1being capable of switching states between a transmitting state in which light is transmitted and a scattering state in which light is scattered. The display device further includes: a plurality of switching elements13formed on the one substrate12and electrically connected respectively to corresponding pixel electrodes16; a plurality of wiring lines14disposed on the one substrate12and at intervals22from the plurality of pixel electrodes16; and a diffraction preventing layer30disposed in the intervals22between the wiring lines14and the pixel electrodes16.
