Catalytic processes using Group VIII metals are disclosed for reacting selected olefinic starting materials with hydrogen to produce as the major products dihydropolyfluoroalkanes or trihydropolyfluoroalkanes wherein the hydrogens are positioned on two adjacent carbon atoms; as are processes using iodine and/or hydrogen iodide in the reduction of selected olefinic starting materials to dihydropolyfluoroalkanes or trihydropolyfluoroalkanes.
