Salicylaldehyde and salicylic acid derivatives and sulfur analogs thereof of the formula I ##STR1## where X is oxygen or sulfur and Y is carbon or nitrogen, and the radicals R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 have the meanings given in the disclosure, and processes and intermediates for manufacturing compounds I.
