ABSTRACT:
A safety system for motor vehicle steering lock incorporated in an ignition switch and including a steering lock bolt displaceable between a retracted position which it occupies when the ignition key is in the lock, and an extended position which it occupies when the ignition key is removed from the ignition switch. The safety system operates to lock the bolt in its retracted position whenever the vehicle is in motion, either by locking the ignition switch to prevent removal of the key or by directly engaging the bolt so that it cannot be displaced to the extended position even if the ignition key is removed from the ignition switch when the vehicle is moving. A detector device senses when the vehicle is in motion and supplies a signal to an electromagnet to effect locking.
