ABSTRACT:
The reduction of an aqueous solution of a carbohydrate to its polyols using as a catalyst zerovalent ruthenium on a hydrothermally stable support can be further improved using the catalyst resulting from production of zerovalent ruthenium by reduction in hydrogen at a temperature in the range 100.degree.-300.degree. C. Reduction of a ruthenium compound to afford zerovalent ruthenium at these lower temperatures affords a more active catalyst.
