ABSTRACT:
Disclosed is a runoff rain gauge100which includes a collector tube104, soil infiltration resistance medium108, a runoff resistance flow element113, a standard rain gauge102, and runoff collection tube114. Precipitation enters the collector tube104and is divided to flow into the infiltration medium108and runoff collection tube114via flow element113. Total precipitation is read in standard rain gauge102, runoff in tube114, and soil infiltration in medium108is calculated by the difference between total precipitation and the runoff. Also disclosed are a runoff rain gauge100comprising: a seal leg150downstream from the runoff resistance flow element113; a collector tube104mounted directly to the ground so that the bottom of the soil infiltration resistance medium108contacts the ground surface; and/or a horizontal capillary tube in the runoff resistance flow element113to insure self-sealing via capillary forces.
