ABSTRACT:
Operation of an electric microswitch14for timing or other purposes during rowing is brought about by the rower moving the heels8of his/her shoes3in opposite sideways directions transitorily. A unit10containing the switch14involves two plates19,20that are tied by cords11to the two heels8respectively within the foot-well6of the boat, so as to slide relative to one another against a spring bias when the heels8move apart. The microswitch14operates in response to the sliding to energize an LED16for sending a light pulse via fibre-optic cable23to a timing unit24. A modified unit10includes a wireless transmitter25in place of the LED16, and an alternative modification involves two parallel fibre-optic cables26,27from the unit24and an optical block32. The block32is moved in response to the heel-movement from where light transmitted by the unit24down the cable26is not reflected back via the cable27, to where the light is reflected back up the cable27from reflective surfaces36,37of block32. Light reflected back to the unit24via the cable27.
