ABSTRACT:
The guidewire extension system includes an initial or primary guidewire having a proximal end having an annular groove structure on an outer surface of the proximal end of the guidewire and an extension guidewire adapted to be releasably but firmly mechanically connected to the proximal end of the initial or primary guidewire. The extension guidewire has a distal end and a proximal end. A connecting assembly, which includes a small diameter tube having a proximal end and a distal end, is mounted at the distal end of the extension guidewire and has a coiled spring received in the tube that is constructed and arranged to receive and grippingly engage and mechanically lock with the annular grooved structure on the outer surface of the proximal end of the initial or primary guidewire in a thread connection. The extension guidewire is disconnected from the initial guidewire by rotating the tube to withdraw the coiled spring from and unthread the coiled spring from the proximal end of the initial or primary guidewire.
