ABSTRACT:
Seismic wave detectors are located so as to form a two-dimensional array. One or more seismic wave transmitting stations are located at predetermined locations relative to the array. Seismic waves are generated from the transmitting station and received by the detector array. The transmitting station and portions of the array are then both moved to new locations along the direction of a seismic traverse and additional seismic waves are generated. The procedure is repeated to provide three-dimensional common depth point coverage of the earth's subsurface. Alternatively, intermediate to each movement of the detector array partial moveups of the transmitting station may be employed for the purpose of generating more closely spaced three-dimensional depth point coverage and in some cases, a higher fold stack.
In the preferred embodiment of the method, the areal recording spread is so disposed as to behave, both in terms of recording and processing, like a standard single line roll-a-long spread commonly used in the seismic prospecting art.
