ABSTRACT:
A reclining chair capable of rocking movement upon its base which may be arranged in a position closely adjacent the wall of the room. A carriage is mounted upon the stationary base of the chair assembly for forward and rearward sliding movement upon the base. The chair frame is rockably mounted upon the carriage and supports in turn, by conventional reclining linkage, the reclining seat and back portions of the assembly. A translation linkage, actuated by the reclining linkage, is employed to shift the carriage and chair frame forwardly on the base in response to reclining movement of the seat and back so that the back does not strike the wall as it reclines. The translation linkage may be uncoupled from the chair base when it is desired to rock the chair. Upon uncoupling the translation linkage, the carriage and chair frame slide forwardly by gravity upon the base to thereby provide clearance from the wall to accommodate rocking movement.
An alternative form of the invention constitutes a conversion unit for converting a conventional rockable recliner to an against-the-wall type unit.
