ABSTRACT:
An instrument for measuring rigger-spread of a boat has an elongate casing1for support athwartships of the boat with a shoulder2of the casing1abutting the outside of the gunwale4opposite the rigger5and a slidingly-adjustable shoulder6abutting the opposite gunwale9. A measuring tape10is extendable longitudinally from the casing1to the oarlock14of the rigger5to give a reading of spread, the extendable length being limited in dependence upon the spacing between the shoulders2,6of the casing1such that this length is increased or decreased by half the amount of any increase or decrease, respectively, of that spacing. Limitation of the extendable length involves a mechanism in which the two ends18,19of a flexible strip15or wire are secured respectively to the sliding shoulder6and the casing1so as to define a loop that is caught by a hook16of the tape10in limiting tape-extension. A modified limiting mechanism involves a step-down 2:1 coupling via pinions23,24between a rack22fixed to a sliding shoulder20and a rack25that engages a stop pin26of the measuring tape27.
