ABSTRACT:
In accordance with the present application, a fluid seal30and fluid sealing element32, which are tolerant of fluid F direction reversals are provided. A sealing element32has at least two brush stages50to restrict leakage of the fluid F through a gap38between a component and a sealing surface. Each brush stage50includes a bristle arrangement44sandwiched between a back plate48and a common mid plate46. A value allows70the fluid F to bypass a bristle arrangement44if the fluid pressure P1or P2varies between the chambers. Permanent damage to the sealing element32is avoided by allowing the higher pressure fluid F to bypass the upstream bristle arrangement44and a properly load the downstream bristle arrangement against a back plate48.
