ABSTRACT:
Aromatic hydroxyaldehydes, such as o- and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, are prepared by the reaction of a phenolic compound, chloroform, and an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature from about 70.degree. to about 105.degree. C. at elevated pressure according to the Reimer-Tiemann reaction. The process improvement results in decreased reaction time.
