A recording ink containing a pigment as a coloring agent, which is dispersed in an ink solvent, the pigment having a primary particle size of not larger than 30 nm, a DBP absorption of at least 75 ml/100 g, a specific surface area in a range of 100-300 m.sup.2 /g, and a tinting strength of at least 100.
