ABSTRACT:
Methods for treating mammals to reduce pain, reduce cell proliferation and/or reduce inflammation are described based on administering to the mammals compounds having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen or an acyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sub.5 is hydrogen, CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.2 OH and R.sub.6 is a hydrocarbon having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Natural and synthetic 1,12-seco derivatives with similar utilities are disclosed. Natural and synthetic derivatives are also disclosed where the sugar moiety is attached at the C-10 carbon on the tricyclic diterpene moiety instead of the C-9 carbon.
