ABSTRACT:
N,N-diethyl 2(.alpha.-naphthoxy)propionamide, ##STR1## a useful herbicide, is produced by reaction of .alpha.-naphthol with an excess of N,N-diethyl-.alpha.-chloropropionamide or -bromopropionamide in the presence of an excess of alkali metal hydroxide. Unreacted amide is removed by vacuum stripping. The haloamide reactant is preferably formed by reaction of .alpha.-chloropropionic or .alpha.-bromopropionic acid with diethylamine in the presence of phosphoryl chloride.
