ABSTRACT:
3,3-BIS[4-DIMETHYLAMINO-PHENYL]-6-DIMETHYLAMINOPHTHALIDE (CVL) is prepared by oxidizing 2-[4,4-bis(dimethylamino)-benzohydryl]-5-dimethylamino benzoic acid by the use of hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous alkaline solution, inert water soluble organic solvent or in a mixture thereof at a temperature of 80.degree. to 130.degree. C and recovering the thus produced CVL as a precipitate. CVL is an industrially important coloring material for pressure sensitive copying paper.
