Phosphite-borane compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein: each R.sub.1 is independently selected from: H; C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl; alkylaryl; aralkyl; aryl; monovalent metal ions; nucleosides; and quaternary ammonium ions, (R.sub.4).sub.4 N.sup.+, in which the substituents R.sub.4 of the ammonium nitrogen atom are H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl;
