ABSTRACT:
This invention provides multistep process embodiments for the production of novel esters which exhibit nonlinear optical response.
A process embodiment is illustrated by the reaction of a Schiff base with a substituted acetic acid to form a stilbene alcohol intermediate: ##STR1## The stilbene alcohol intermediate is decarboxylated, and then is esterified in the presence of a pyridine type catalyst to provide an ester with a conjugated structure.
