Alcohols of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently methyl or ethyl or together signify pentamethylene,
formed by the enzymatic hydrolysis of a corresponding (RS) alkanoic acid ester are intermediates for Vitamin E.
