ABSTRACT:
The present invention relates to a process for the production of aqueous dispersions of polyurethanes containing chemically incorporated carboxylate groups wherein the counterions to the carboxylate groups are predominantly ammonium ions corresponding to the formula ##STR1## by mixing a starting aqueous dispersion of polyurethanes containing chemically incorporated carboxylate groups wherein the counterions to the carboxylate groups are ammonium ions corresponding to the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different and represent C.sub.1-4 alkyl groups, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in these substituents is 3 to 6,
with at least an equivalent quantity of ammonia, based on the trialkyl ammonium ions, and subsequently removing under vacuum at least a portion of the displaced trialkyl amines and the excess ammonia, if present.
