ABSTRACT:
This invention relates to a process for the production of a heterogeneous ion exchange membrane having a high ion transport number in the presence of a high ion concentration, which comprises mixing a finely powdered ion exchange material with a crystalline polyolefin resin, forming the resultant mixture into a membrane-shaped article and treating the membrane-shaped article with an aqueous solution of at least one salt selected from alkali metal salts and ammonium salts, having a concentration of from 17% by weight to saturation, at a temperature of at least 80.degree. C. for at least 10 minutes.
