2-(2-haloethylthio)-phenylsulfonamides of formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkenyl and Z is hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine, are prepared by converting a phenylsulfonamide of formula II ##STR2## wherein Y is a tertiary alkyl group or a silyl group in succession and without isolating intermediates, with
