ABSTRACT:
A process for the preparation of highly oriented blown polyethylene film is disclosed. The film is mono-axially oriented and has improved stiffness, tear resistance and tensile strength. In the process, a molten polymer composition is extruded through an annular die gap of at least 2 mm at a melt temperature at the die gap of below 160.degree. C. The process achieves films which exhibit an x-ray diffraction intensity ratio max/min of the 110 retleation band of at least 20 and an angle .alpha. between the average orientation direction of the polymer molecules and film extrusion direction of at most 20.degree..
