ABSTRACT:
Lower alkyl bis-(.beta.-carboxyethyl) phosphine oxides are prepared from lower alkyl bis-(.beta.-cyanoethyl) alkyl phosphine by oxidizing the phosphine to cyanoethyl phosphine oxide, hydrolyzing the cyanoethyl phosphine oxide with calcium hydroxide to produce a calcium salt of lower alkyl bis-(.beta.-carboxyethyl) phosphine oxide, and acidifying the calcium salt to produce lower alkyl bis-(.beta.-carboxyethyl) phosphine oxide.
