ABSTRACT:
An aldehyde is prepared by passing an aromatic carboxylic compound or an aliphatic carboxylic compound having at most one .alpha.-hydrogen atom in the acyl group, in the presence of hydrogen at elevated temperature over a catalyst comprising at least 25% w of iron oxide expressed as Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, calculated on the total catalyst.
