ABSTRACT:
An improvement in a process for preparing silicon tetrachloride or silicon trichloride wherein elemental silicon is contacted with hydrogen chloride in a fluidized bed, the improvement residing in carrying out the process in the presence of an iron compound, which iron compound is present in an amount such that when calculated as iron, the iron content is 10 to 43 weight percent based on the weight of the total solids in the fluidized bed, at a temperature in the range of 260.degree.-600.degree. C, preferably in the absence of an inert gas.
