ABSTRACT:
High octane alkylates are prepared by selectively alkylating paraffinic hydrocarbons with other paraffinic hydrocarbons at alkylation conditions in the presence of hydrogen and of a catalyst comprising a metal pentafluoride selected from the group consisting of tantalum pentafluoride, niobium pentafluoride and mixtures thereof and a hydrogen halide. The product obtained is a mixture containing primarily C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 isomerized paraffins.
