ABSTRACT:
An active element such as a MIM element includes a first electrically conductive layer, a nonlinearly conductive layer having a low dielectric constant disposed on the first conductive layer and a second electrically conductive layer disposed on the nonlinearly conductive layer. The nonlinearly conductive layer can be deposited on the first conductive layer by electrolytic polymerization. A matrix of liquid crystal picture element electrodes driven by active elements in accordance with the invention can be formed with as little as two or three photolythographic steps.
