ABSTRACT:
Symmetrical or 2,3,5,6-tetrahalopyridine is prepared by reacting 3,5-dihalopyridine in the liquid phase with chlorine or bromine while heating and irradiating the reactants with ultraviolet light. The reaction may be carried out with or without a chlorinated solvent. For example, 2,3,5,6-tetra-chloropyridine is prepared selectively from 3,5-dichloropyridine by chlorination at 140.degree.-150.degree. C. under ultraviolet light for 44 hours.
