There are disclosed a process for preparing a printing plate which comprises the steps of providing, on a support, a layer containing a water-soluble polymer which becomes water-insoluble by a metal ion, and feeding the metal ion imagewisely from the surface of the layer to form an image pattern comprising the hardened water-soluble polymer on the support, and
