ABSTRACT:
Processes for preparing polystyrene having a .beta. hydroxy group and glycol grafted polystyrene thereof.
.beta. hydroxy group is introduced onto polystyrene by reacting ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with the aromatic ring of the polystyrene in the presence of Lewis acid catalyst, the graft polystyrene being obtained by reacting ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide with polystyrene having a .beta. hydroxy group in the presence of base to result in a linkage that is stable in acidic medium.
