ABSTRACT:
The invention relates to a method for preparing a polycarbonate, by mixing (i) 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol, (ii) dimethyl carbonate, and (iii) a basic catalyst, and heating components (i)-(iii) to produce an intermediate, followed by heating the intermediate at a temperature of less than or equal to 300.degree. C. to produce the polycarbonate. The invention further relates to the polycarbonates produced by the methods of the present invention.
