ABSTRACT:
Optically pure (S)-.alpha.-[(tert-butylsulfonyl)methyl]-hydrocinnamic acid of the formula ##STR1## is prepared from racemic (RS)-.alpha.-[(tert-butylsulfonyl)-methyl]hydrocinnamic acid esters of the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1-4 -alkyl, by protease-catalyzed selective hydrolysis in emulsion in an aqueous medium at a controlled pH value between about 6.5 and 8.5.
