ABSTRACT:
A high surface area alumina is prepared by heating a solution of an aluminum trialkoxide in a secondary or tertiary alcohol solvent to a sub-critical temperature at which the solvent decomposes to form water, and the water so formed hydrolyzes the aluminum trialkoxide. Solutions include aluminum tri-s-butoxide in s-butanol. The resultant aluminas have surface areas 500 m.sup.2 /g or greater.
