ABSTRACT:
The reversible preparation of active magnesium hydride MgH.sub.2 by reaction of magnesium with molecular hydrogen at a pressure of from 1 to 2 bar and at a temperature of from 150.degree. C. to 250.degree. C. The improvement comprises producing the magnesium by thermally decomposing a magnesium-containing compound at a pressure from 10.sup.-6 to 1 bar and in the absence or presence of an organic aprotic solvent, the magnesium obtained by the decomposition being isolated as a highly reactive powder.
