ABSTRACT:
Diethylcarbonate is chlorinated with dry chlorine gas in the presence of ultraviolet rays to give ethyl .alpha.-chloroethyl carbonate in a good yield. The chlorination is preferably carried out, with or without a carbon tetrachloride solvent as a reaction medium, at a range of temperature of 45.degree. to 55.degree. C.
