ABSTRACT:
A process for preparing carboxylic acids (e.g. acetic acid) from alcohols (e.g. methanol) by carbonylation is provided. The process employs a catalyst comprising rhodium and nickel supported upon a carbon, preferably a high surface area carbon. The process described is carried out in the presence of hydrogen and a halide promoter leading to high yields of the carboxylic acid under very mild conditions (1 to 50 atmospheres, 150.degree.- 300.degree. C.).
