ABSTRACT:
Described is a novel process for preparing allyl alpha and beta ionones defined according to the structure: ##STR1## wherein one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond; and wherein the wavy lines represent the cis or trans juxtaposition of the acyl and cyclohexenyl rings about the carbon-carbon double bond which is alpha to the acyl moiety, and intermediates used in said process defined according to the structure: ##STR2## wherein the wavy lines and dashed lines are defined supra and wherein R.sub.1 represents hydrogen or allyl and Z represents methyl or OR.sub.2 and wherein R.sub.2 represents methyl or ethyl.
