ABSTRACT:
The present disclosure is directed to acid scavenging in the acid-catalyzed preparation of a bisphenol by condensation of a phenolic compound and a carbonyl compound. During the preparation, strong acids leach from the acidic ion exchange resin catalyst into the reaction effluent. These acids can be scavenged effectively and without contamination by an inorganic oxide before purification of the product. The acid scavenging improves the product quality and yield by reducing acid catalyzed cracking of bisphenols during purification and finishing steps.
