ABSTRACT:
A process for carrying out continuous contact steam decomposition reaction of atmospheric distillation residual oil or reduced pressure distillation residual oil at a temmperature of 700.degree. to 1000.degree.C. in the presence of a catalyst which has been prepared by mixing and kneading calcium oxide with 5 to 20% by weight of iron sesquioxide and 10 to 30% by weight of silicon oxide of which proportions are to be compared with the weight of said calcium oxide, or further adding proper amount of at least a member selected from the group consisting of magnesium, aluminum and chromium oxides and burning the result at high temperature.
