ABSTRACT:
A desulfurizing process wherein a gas stream containing SO.sub.2 is contacted with a citric acid or citrate-containing solution, and a gas stream containing H.sub.2 S is contacted with the resulting solution, whereby elemental sulfur is precipitated and removed. The rate of flow of the respective gases contacting the aforesaid solution is such that the amount of H.sub.2 S and SO.sub.2 contained in the solution after said solution has been contacted with the gas streams is substantially in the ratio of two mols of H.sub.2 S to one mol of SO.sub.2. A portion at least of the solution from which elemental sulfur is removed is passed to the first step of the process, for contacting the gas stream containing SO.sub.2.
