ABSTRACT:
This invention concerns a process for making C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanols and particularly ethanol which comprises contacting a mixture of CO and H.sub.2 at a pressure of 30 atm or greater and at a temperature of at least 150.degree. C. with a catalyst system comprising a ruthenium-containing compound, a cobalt-containing compound and a manganese-containing compound dispersed in a low melting quaternary phosphonium salt.
