A process for preparing aromatic compounds, wherein a gaseous feed containing C.sub.6 to C.sub.20 hydrocarbons is reacted in the presence of a catalyst, which catalyst comprises a metal from Group VIII of the Periodic Table loaded on a hydrotalcite-type support material having in its uncalcined state the general formula
