ABSTRACT:
The present invention relates to a procedure for hydrolyzing keratin, in which procedure the solid keratin ingredient is (a) pretreated with an aqueous solution containing sulphite ions to form denatured keratin, and (b) hydrolyzed with the aid of a proteolytic enzyme to form keratin hydrolysate. The pretreatment is carried out at about 60.degree. to 100.degree. C. and it lasts about 10 minutes to 4 hours. The hydrolysate thus obtained can be treated further for use as a fodder addition or to isolate oligopeptides for use in cosmetics.
