ABSTRACT:
A process for preparing a phthalide compound represented by the formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are individually an alkyl group, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 can respectively bond to each other to form a heterocyclic ring together with a nitrogen atom, comprising oxidizing a triphenylmethane compound represented by the formula (2) ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are the same as above, is oxidized in the presence of activated carbon in an aqueous solvent by an oxidizing agent.
The process can provide a fast reaction that produces a high purity product with high yield.
