The process of the present invention relates to the preparation of precursor trisubstituted benzoic acid intermediates having the structural formula ##STR1## wherein R is --COOR.sup.a wherein R.sup.a is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; formyl or C(O)R.sup.b wherein R.sup.b is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;
