ABSTRACT:
A process for the preparation of aromatic polyamides comprises reacting carbon monoxide, a diamine and an aromatic polyiodide having at least two iodine atoms covalently bonded to an aromatic ring in non-ortho positions. The process is conducted in the presence of a solvent, a catalyst and a base at a pressure greater than about 15 psia (1.05 kg/cm.sup.2).
