The process involving the reaction of an alcohol ether, RY(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.n --OH, with a metal hydroxide, MOH, to produce the corresponding intermediate salt RY(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.n OM and reacting said salt with a butyrolactone, ##STR1## to produce the corresponding carboxypropylated product
